As a real estate professional, I’ve learned that no amount of automation or social media presence can replace one thing—human connection.

It’s the foundation of every successful business, every strong community, and every partnership that truly lasts.

In this episode of the HomeBrew Podcast, I sat down with Jimmy Sorrells, founder of Liberty Networking Group and owner of Upstate Merchant Advocates. Jimmy’s story is a powerful example of what happens when you stop chasing quick wins and start focusing on building relationships that matter.

Finding Purpose After a Setback

Jimmy’s journey began like many entrepreneurs I know—with an unexpected change. After a decade at Kellogg’s, he was laid off in 2019. It was a moment that could have gone either way, but Jimmy saw it as an opportunity to take control of his future.

He moved into the world of merchant services, helping businesses save money on their payment processing. As an independent provider, he wasn’t tied to a single product or system, which gave him the flexibility to serve clients based on their actual needs.

But what really stood out to me wasn’t the business model—it was the mission. Jimmy told me, “I didn’t want to go through that again. I wanted to create something I could build myself.”

That mindset—of turning uncertainty into purpose—is what truly defines an entrepreneur.

How Liberty Networking Began

While working in merchant services, Jimmy started attending multiple networking groups. He quickly noticed what worked and what didn’t.

He saw that people craved genuine connection but often got stuck in repetitive, surface-level interactions. Out of that realization came Liberty Networking Group, a place for liberty-minded entrepreneurs and professionals to build relationships that are both meaningful and productive.

He started small—in Taylors, South Carolina, with only six people. But word spread fast.

Today, Liberty Networking has 24 chapters across two states and continues to grow.

Jimmy described it best: “The foundation of everything we do is building relationships. You can’t fake that. You have to show up.”

Structure That Serves Entrepreneurs

When I asked Jimmy how Liberty Networking stands out, his answer was simple but effective.

Each chapter allows only one seat per industry to reduce competition, but the culture is built on abundance, not scarcity. Members have access to the entire network, not just their own chapter.

This structure helps small business owners and professionals collaborate instead of competing. The focus isn’t on enforcing strict rules but on creating an environment that encourages accountability and growth.

Jimmy calls it “Return on Involvement.” He explained, “You can join the group, but just showing up doesn’t get you referrals. You have to put in the time, get involved, and build trust.”

That idea—showing up and investing in people—is something I see every day in real estate. It’s the same principle that turns clients into lifelong friends.

Bringing Back Face-to-Face Networking

One of my favorite parts of our conversation was Jimmy’s firm stance on keeping meetings in person. Since day one, Liberty Networking has had a no-virtual-meeting policy, and for good reason.

As he put it, “People were tired of virtual meetings. I want to shake your hand and look you in the eye.”

That really hit home for me. Over the past few years, many of us have gotten used to doing business through screens. But something real gets lost when we trade a handshake for a hyperlink.

Jimmy and I talked about how body language, energy, and emotion are essential parts of communication. You can’t get those from behind a muted mic.

And he’s right—there’s no substitute for showing up.

Culture, Community, and Giving Back

Liberty Networking isn’t just about business. It’s about community.

Each chapter meets every two weeks, and beyond that, members participate in:

  • Monthly Socials: Networking events that also support local nonprofits. So far, the group has raised over $55,000 for charity.

  • Educational Workshops: Called Networking Blueprint, these sessions teach practical business skills led by members.

  • Special Events: Programs like Healthy Connections and AI in Action that highlight topics relevant to business owners today.

It’s not about sitting in a room and swapping business cards. It’s about building real relationships that make a lasting difference. Being part of a professional podcast network has allowed me to bring stories like Jimmy’s to a broader audience, helping shine a light on the local entrepreneurs who make South Carolina thrive.

A Mission Rooted in Faith and Purpose

When I asked Jimmy what keeps him going, his answer was clear: “I feel like I’m doing what God called me to do.”

He’s not just helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses—he’s helping them build lives of independence and meaning. That purpose shines through in every chapter meeting and every event he organizes.

And that’s something I truly admire. In real estate, like in any entrepreneurial journey, the most successful people are the ones who connect their work to a greater purpose.

Relationships Will Always Be the Real ROI

Whether you’re in real estate, small business, or any kind of sales, the formula for success doesn’t change. It’s not about quick wins or viral marketing tricks. It’s about:

  • Showing up consistently

  • Building trust through real interactions

  • Supporting your community

  • Staying true to your values

That’s what Liberty Networking is all about. It’s what HomeBrew stands for, too—real stories, real people, and real results.
