Running a business isn't just about numbers, strategies, and hard work. It’s about people. And to build something truly successful, you’ve got to understand how people work—how they think, operate, and thrive. That includes yourself, your team, and anyone you’re trying to serve.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Stefanie Carlstedt on my podcast. She’s a Nebraska-based human design expert and business coach. Stefanie teaches entrepreneurs how to build businesses around who they really are, using a system called human design. It’s not about fitting into someone else’s plan, but about finally figuring out your own.

Our conversation hit on some powerful ideas. And in this post, I’m sharing them with you!

From Burnout to Alignment: Stefanie’s Story

Stefanie started as a successful health and fitness coach. On paper, she had it all. But behind the scenes, she was drowning.

Burnout was creeping in. Then life threw her a serious curveball—she lost her father, and her entire business collapsed around the same time.

Instead of rushing to rebuild the same life, Stefanie took a step back. That’s when she found human design.

At first, she thought it was fluff. But after reading about her own energy type, something clicked. She said it was the first time she felt like there wasn’t something wrong with her.

Her new path led her to create a business that actually fits who she is. Through Stef Carlstedt Coaching, she now helps others do the same.

What Is Human Design

I’ll be honest—I didn’t know much about human design before. I’d heard the name, lumped it in with Enneagram and Myers-Briggs, and moved on.

However, Stefanie explained that human design isn’t like those tests. You don’t answer a bunch of questions. It’s built off your birth date, time, and place. It’s more of a map than a quiz. And, it doesn’t just describe your personality, but shows how your energy is meant to function in the world.

Most of us are living with layers of programming, like how we were raised, what we’ve been told to believe, and what success is “supposed” to look like.

Human design helps peel that back and reconnect you with what actually works for you.

Energy Types Explained: The Five Ways People Work and Lead

There are five energy types in human design. Each one has its own strengths, needs, and way of working. Here’s a quick breakdown Stefanie shared:

1. Generator

Generators are the builders. They have a steady energy source and love working on something that lights them up. But if they’re doing work they hate, that energy turns to frustration, and it spreads to everyone around them.

2. Manifesting Generator

This is Stefanie’s type—and mine too. We move fast, jump between ideas, and don’t always take the traditional path. We need freedom to explore, change directions, and keep things exciting.

3. Projector

Projectors aren’t built for the typical 9-to-5 grind. They’re deep thinkers, natural guides, and they need rest to stay sharp. They see other people clearly but can burn out quickly if they don’t protect their energy.

4. Manifestor

Manifestors are initiators. They spark ideas, start movements, and lead with vision. They also need alone time to recharge and tend to work best when they’re trusted to follow their gut.

5. Reflector

Reflectors are rare—only 1% of the population. They absorb the energy around them and reflect it. They’re like mirrors for their environment and need time to make decisions. They’re great at sensing when something’s off in a team or community.

Why a One-Size-Fits-All Training Doesn’t Work

Managing a real estate team of over 30 agents, I’ve seen how easy it is to fall into the trap of standard checklists and “proven systems.” But that only works for some. Others fall through the cracks, not because they aren’t capable, but because the system wasn’t made for them.

Stefanie’s coaching clients don’t all get the same blueprint. Instead, she uses their human design to create strategies that actually fit their natural style, whether it’s how they learn, market, or lead.

That kind of personalization is what makes Stefanie’s business coaching so different and effective.

Unlearning Old Norms Is Crucial for Modern Entrepreneurs

We’ve been taught to believe success means hustle, late nights, and never slowing down. But what if that’s not the best way?

Human design flips that thinking on its head. It’s not about pushing harder but about working smarter in a way that fits who you are. And, more people are catching on.

Stefanie mentioned the rise in homeschooling as just one sign that people are looking for different ways to live and work.

Modern Learning Resources to Tap On

One of the most valuable tools we have right now? Podcasts.

Stefanie also hosts her own show, The Magnetic Business Podcast, where she goes even deeper into human design and relevant topics, and how it affects business. I recommend it for anyone who wants to grow without burning out.

And, if you're in real estate—especially as an agent—joining a real estate podcast network is also a smart move. You get access to real stories, expert advice, and people who’ve been where you are.
