Lake Jocassee Real Estate
Lake Jocassee is the Upstate's most dramatic lake: clear, cold water in the Blue Ridge foothills, with waterfalls pouring straight into it. Duke Energy completed the lake in 1973 by damming the Whitewater, Thompson, Toxaway and Horsepasture rivers. It covers about 7,500 acres with roughly 75 miles of shoreline and reaches depths of around 350 feet, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
Why Jocassee homes are rare
About 43,000 acres of public land surround the lake, including the Jocassee Gorges and Devils Fork State Park. That protection is why the shoreline looks so wild, and it's also why private homes on or near the water are scarce. When a Jocassee property comes up, it tends to draw serious interest from buyers who have been waiting for one.
